PCPPI commits to reduce energy consumption, shifts to renewable energy

April 26, 2022
Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines Inc. (PCPPI)—the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the Philippines—is reinforcing its commitment to reduce its energy consumption, while focusing on shifting to renewable energy as it continuously installs solar panels in all its manufacturing plants nationwide.
PCPPI recently joined this year’s Earth Hour campaign. Every year, on the last Saturday of March, individuals and groups worldwide turn off their lights for an hour. This serves as a call for urgent action on climate change.
PCPPI saved 116.819 KW of energy last March 26. This is equivalent to 183 lbs of carbon dioxide that could power a vehicle for 206 miles*. It was achieved by switching off non-essential lights in some areas of their plants nationwide from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.
“PCPPI is committed to creating a positive impact on the society and environment. We participate in the Earth Hour yearly to help raise awareness on climate change and its effects on our everyday life. With this activity, we are able to unite, inspire, and empower our employees to take action to protect our planet by turning off our lights for one hour,” said PCPPI president and chief executive officer, Frederick D. Ong.
The Worldwide Fund (WWF) in Australia first started Earth Hour in 2007. It has grown into a global campaign that involves around 190 countries and territories today.

Solar power
PCPPI’s shift to renewable energy is also well underway. They are preparing to commission solar panels in their manufacturing plants in Sto. Tomas, Cebu, and Davao.
The second phase of this initiative is also scheduled to complete by 2023. PCPPI is arranging the installation of solar panels in its remaining plants in Pampanga, Cagayan de Oro, Bacolod, Zamboanga, Batangas, Bicol, and IloIlo.
The move to solar power is seen to reduce the company’s dependency on grid electricity produced from fossil fuels. PCPPI is looking at close to a 30% reduction in the use of grid electricity.
This renewable energy adoption reinforces the company’s sustainability agenda created in 2018. This is in response to the global effort toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), specifically contributing to the targets of SDG 7 (Affordable & Clean Energy) and 13 (Climate Action). It is done by reducing its greenhouse gas emission by 4,400 tons of carbon dioxide.
PCPPI is the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country and distributes well-known beverage brands, including Pepsi-Cola, Mountain Dew, 7-Up, Mirinda, Mug, Gatorade, Tropicana, Lipton, Sting, Premier, Milkis, and Aquafina.
